The
end-product
The end-product comprises a central system for simulation and optimisation of
hydrosystem operation, as well as a series of separate software
applications for solving specific problems, i.e., inputting data
to the central system or post-processing the results thereof. Software
applications will include: models of hydrological and hydrogeological
processes at a basin scale, models for stochastic simulation of
hydrologic variables, assessment of water requirements, economic
analysis of water management policies, and assessment of pollutant
loads and their space-time variation. The core of the information
system will be a relational database for storing the entire information
(both static and dynamic) which is related to the operation of
any hydrosystem: layers of geographical information, hydrological,
meteorological and water quality information, information related
to hydraulic works and water uses, economic data, input and output
data of models and other software applications). A specialised
software application will allow for managing, processing and visualizing data through direct
connection to the database. Furthermore, the information system
will be supported by methodologies related to hydrosystems management.
These refer to the infrastructure for measuring hydrometeorological
and water-quality variables, the classification and coding of water-quality
variables and the framework for operational application of the
proposed system. Special emphasis will be put on the dissemination
of results among specialists, other interested scientists and the
general public, thus helping to augment society’s awareness of
water resource management issues. Dissemination of knowledge will
be mainly achieved through implementing Internet applications and
organising meetings with educational or scientific purpose.
