Summary
of the parameterization-simulation-optimization methodology
Parameterization
of the hydrosystem: The parametric rules are mathematical relationships
that express the reservoir releases as a function of the total useful
storage, describing the actual state of the system. These relationships
contain a few number of parameters (two for each reservoir), which are
the decision variables of the optimization model.
Simulation of system's
operations: The simulation model represents in an accurate manner
the operations of the hydrosystem, handling all physical constraints and
trying to satisfy the operational ones, that are imposed from the manager
of the system. This is done by formulating the mathematical model of the
system as a network optimization problem, which is solved at each time
step.
Optimization of
system's performance: The performance measure of the system is related
to the reliability, yield or economy of the management policy. The optimization
algorithm is searching for the appropriate values of parameters of the
reservoir operation rules that maximize this performance
measure.
